The Armagnac Story

A Rébellion in Brandy

Cardinal du Four 21 Rébellion is a luxurious Armagnac inspired by Cardinal Vital du Four, a 14th-century French theologian who first documented the virtues of distillation in France. Named for the biblical number 21—symbolizing rebellion—blending vintage Armagnacs aged 21 to 43 years (average 30). Housed in a decanter shaped like a Cardinal’s mitre, it embodies harmony, illumination, and wonder. With no additives, its natural amber hue reveals floral notes of jasmine and iris, layered with nutmeg, dried fig, caramelized apple, and vanilla, finishing long with hints of cacao and salted caramel.

the Armagnac Region:

Bas‑Armagnac,
Ténarèze, and
Haut‑Armagnac

The Armagnac region in southwest France is the birthplace of the country’s oldest brandy. Officially protected under the AOC designation, it is divided into three distinct terroirs—Bas‑ArmagnacArmagnac‑Ténarèze, and Haut‑Armagnac—each with its own soil composition, climate, and flavor profile. Bas‑Armagnac, the most celebrated area, is known for its sandy, iron‑rich soils that produce elegant, fruit‑forward eaux‑de‑vie. Armagnac‑Ténarèze offers clay‑limestone terrain, yielding fuller‑bodied spirits that develop structure and depth with age. Meanwhile, Haut‑Armagnac, the smallest zone, is prized for its rarity and limestone-rich character. This diversity of terroir, combined with Gascony’s temperate climate and centuries of craftsmanship, makes the Armagnac region a unique and authentic expression of French heritage—an essential foundation for understanding what makes Armagnac unlike any other spirit.
